Program Profile Children are our future, and, regrettably, their needs are often unfulfilled. This can lead to a lack of confidence, which can follow them to adulthood. We strive toward the following goals: - 1 development of awareness and flexibility. - 2 the nurturing of relationships. - 3 self-confidence. We begin with physical exercises to improve motor skills and coordination, such as learning how to fall without injury. In conjunction with basic principles of confident movement, the children are given progressively more advanced instruction in Aikido techniques.

Mostly non-competitive games which sneak aikido skills and philosophy into a session characterized by laughter and excitement. Older kids program progressively more structured and technique-oriented. (Editor's note: Friedl Sensei is the author of a book and video about kid's aikido class, and has a very entertaining new dvd which features him performing full-speed high-fall ukemi without anyone there to throw him. Highly recommended).

Classes for 7-10 are game-centric, with aikido skills, physical skills (balance, coordination, movement) and discipline (sitting still, appropriate behavior, etc.) equally stressed. Classes for 11+ are technique-centric, with aikido skills, physical skills, discipline, and games. An advanced Teen Samurai program combines more rigorous training with Samurai movies and pizza on alternate Friday nights. Several senior students help with the younger class. Parents are encouraged to train with their kids.

We limit our classes to 20 students aged from 10-14, around this age they start to train with the adults as well in a later class with Paul Haynes Sensei - Sandan This is how we have overcome the problems of trying to transition children into the adult program. We have two sleepover camps per year which are very popular, where we grade children in parts of the adult grades, recognising their achievements with coloured stripes on their belts. These camps also have lots of fun and games.

The program emphasizes center, techniques and fun. We emphasize to the kids that there are other ways to handle conflict besides violence. We want them to be able to be calm and balanced (centered) when things are a little crazy, to fall safely, to feel empowered, and to have fun. Along with empty hand techniques, we teach jo and bokken - kid-sized, of course! We also offer a Teen Aikido class. Some of the Junior Aikido students from other years are now in this class.

Our program revolves around respecting ourselves and others, and honing our awareness skills. We do this by using a system of 10 kyu ranks each with an animal guide and a specific quality (such as cooperation, responsibility, flow...) that is worked on at each level. Having fun is an absolute requirement!

I have three age ranges for my children''s program. Aiki- Mites are 5-8, Kids 9-12, and Teens13-16. Each area is 4 years long and gives training specific to the age range to allow for the best possible learning. As a child progresses in age and in the age ranges the Aikido becomes more technique and complex and fun. A teen is ready for the adult class by the time they are done with the teen class. I offer many under 17 events, seminars, sleep over trainings, and a fundraising Aiki-Talent show for my children. Children are both the future of our planet and of Aikido. My main goals for the childrens program as a whole is for personal growth and empowerment of children--- Warriors of Peace.

We believe that the future of our country and world depends on polite, thoughtful and reliable children. Our program not only focusses on the martial arts lessons but also reinforces the good lessons kids learn at school and at home. Role playing for socialization skills, games to teach teamwork and group dynamics, and games or activities that teach physical and mental coordination are the backbone of our program, with Aikido technique as the encompassing theme. We have frequent events like our dojo movie nights and sleepover training sessions, and our trips and retreats to the mountains of the Northwest are always a hit. Kids are first here!

Aikido of San Antonio offers classes to children 2 times per week. We will accept up to four five year-olds. When we've reached that capacity we have to enforce our policy of ages 6 and up. Children work together initially during class; sometimes the older children separate and practice together. We teach Aikido with an emphasis on discipline and meditation and stillness. The children seem to love to learn to breathe and quiet their minds as a part of the normal practice in the dojo.

The emphasis is on respect, to themselves and everyone else. From aikitaiso exercises to ukemi and principles of irimi and tenkan, teaching them how their own bodies move and how to control it. Our first rule in the dojo “no injuries!” If we ask them to do something they think they might get hurt doing, don’t do it. This begins the learning of taking responsibility for their-own actions.
